Meet our summer camp directors!

Tanisha and Emily are excited to keep things rocking this summer!

Tanisha Barnes (she/her) was born and raised in Southwest Atlanta and is the proud single mother of a bright and beautiful 11-year-old. She is a graduate of Georgia State University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Tanisha plans to pursue a master’s degree in clinical social work. In her free time, she enjoys reading and writing poetry and is an avid fan of Hip Hop and R&B music.

Her passion for music and her commitment to helping others heal led her to Y’all Rock Camp ATL in the summer of 2023. The experience working with both children and adults inspired her to make a long-term commitment to the organization as camp director for our 2024 youth summer camp. As camp co-director, Tanisha looks forward to helping cultivate a safe, inclusive space that supports and furthers YRC ATL’s mission.

Emily Backus (she/her) is an elementary school music teacher, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter who has been working with YRC ATL since 2015. Her band Mom Friend is a direct result of learning how to take up space, be loud, and shred at camp. She is the proud parent of an orange cat who loves to read and a strange dog who loves yogurt. She is excited to use her Capricorn sun and moon to keep things efficient and on-schedule :)
